153,885 Views - In the Fall of Late 1990 (November / December), Greenhouse Effect suddenly found themselves a Two Piece band With Guitarist / Drummer / Lead Vocalist Clark Hagins and Bassist Rick Carmody working on a fledgling new project that was tentatively called "Go Legit" and contained some 64 Songs as Hagins called it an extremely long "Rock Opera" that would be reminiscent of the Who's Tommy but mixed with what Carmody called "Rock Comedy",..and maybe FRANK ZAPPA STYLE !. "Going Legit' originally was going to be this hilarious three cassette idea that was long and rambling and had 'funny' musical ideas along the lines of the Tubes, Frank Zappa and Ray Davies of the Kinks ,...but we simply had no record deal and very limited funds,..it was tough for me to get money out of Carmody and of course for me to get him to take me serious ,..nevermind the fact that 'nobody' took him serious (Laughs)" Says Hagins. "Going Legit" would be the story of a chap named "Maury" who would travel to Iraq to fight in the war in an effort to "Get respect" and recognition but ultimately he would come home to family humiliation and street life homelessness on the Streets of San Pedro California with only Prostitutes for friends and Hagins Played practically all the instruments on what ended up as a very incomplete 8 song final cassette; "Legit' has 'Ben is Dead' and "Star" AND ...a buncha songs that today G.e. is known for" Says Hagins "The first two songs that Ted and i recorded were in El Segundo at a Pretty good studio with Sound engineer Bill Krodel and the two songs "Wilson Phillips" and "America the Beautiful" had trappings of bands like Rush, Genesis, Metal, Captain Beyond and the Who about 1970 to 72',......all the songs that we did over at Accessive Light and Sound ( In Harbor City Calif.) with Andy Houston for cheaper money were far   different,....very punk, garage, and grunge,..that was January and February 1991. Hagins did not know this at the time but "Going Legit' would PRETTY MUCH be the final project that he would record with Bassist Rick Carmody ( The band had only recently parted ways with Guitarist-Phil Keegan in September 1990) except for four more songs, those being "White Black Thang", Please Please me (The Beatles Cover), and "Manipulation" along with "Subdue" in April and May of 1991. "I thought that "White Black Thang' would save the G.e. project but it didn't,..Ted was already jamming with other bands and Musicians and in 92' he was gone" Says Hagins. The heaviness of "Wilson Phillips" would be a reminder of the Phil_Keegan_Guitar era of G.e. ,..but only a final reminder,..the band would convert into the radio friendly desperate band of 1991 and 92' after this very busy grunge rock track. Rock City Productions would release "Going Legit' out of Boston Massachusetts 1991 and today "Hey Negrita" is by far the stand out song and a 'glimpse' at rock's future of Seattle Grunge music that would come about a year later as the track displays Hagins hammering dark 'power chords' on his Ibanez Guitar and Small Peavey "Bandit" amp and moaning a gravely low voice into the microphone as the song rambles menacingly ala Neil Young. "Hey Negrita" is completely the Song that Launched the whole 1990's" Says Hagins "Record labels heard that and they went and found Eddie Vedders and Nirvanas"..."That Song 'was' the future of music - RIGHT THERE !!" HAGINS and Carmody would put out an ad in the Recycler paper and soon find San Pedro Drummer-Martin Silva and the 'new' three-piece G.e. would be in place. "I thought it so ironic that he was from San Pedro (Laughs)" Says Hagins. Hagins' Guitar work here is surprisingly good and soulful and what today Hagins calls "Over-qualified and Over-achieving" "I am most certainly NOT as good a Guitarist as 'Wilson' displays,...people all think that 'this' is a Phil Keegan Track ,..but it isn't" - The dark lyrics and subject matter of the Song make it a G.e. classic;

The sardonic lyrics begin with earnest;

 "The pills were in my hand ,..the note was on the mirror"

ALL HOPE HAD BEEN EXTINGUISHED,..I COULD SEE NO OTHER OPTIONS !

OOH THIS thing called Life

controlled by the Mad man above !!

'FOR THIS BEGGING YOUNG LAD

WHO FOUND NO HAND OF HOPE NEAR,..

 etc...."and then Rock and Roll saved my day" !!

so sings Hagins in one of G.e's Greatest Songs.

THE HILARIOUS LYRICS ONLY CEMENT THE ONLINE REPUTATION OF THE AMAZING SONG;

"ROCK N ROLL SAVED MY DAY

YOUR POP SONG HOOKED ME A DOSE OF HOPE !

LATER, Hagins elaborates ;

Hold on one more day ! Ha ,..I like it !!

"A beautiful integral message

woven in pussy galore !
